How to take quote photos that get an accurate reply

A few clear photos are usually enough for me to price a job before I arrive. Here's how to take ones that actually help.

The Four Angles That Cover Most Jobs

You don't need to be a photographer. Take one of each of these and I'll have what I need.

1. Wide Shot

Step back and show the whole area. I need to see what's around the problem, how much access there is, and whether nearby surfaces are affected.

2. Medium Shot

Show the problem in context. Include the floor, ceiling or adjacent wall so I can judge scale and what's already there.

3. Close-Up

Get in close on the damage or fitting. For a crack, show the full length. For a lock, show the faceplate and strike.

4. Side Angle

A 45-degree or side-on shot shows depth, gaps, bowing or whether a door is sitting flush in its frame.

Lighting Makes the Difference

  • Use daylight where you can — open blinds or take the photo during the day.
  • Turn on the room light if the area is shaded.
  • Tap the screen on the problem area so the camera focuses and exposes there.
  • Avoid pointing directly into bright windows — it silhouettes the repair area.

Photos That Don't Help

  • Blurry or taken while moving
  • Too dark or only flash-lit
  • Extremely zoomed-in with no context
  • Old photos that don't show the current state

What to Capture for Common Jobs

Door Repairs

  • Wide shot of the door in its frame
  • Close-up of the gap at the top and side
  • Latch/strike plate with the door ajar

Fence & Deck Repairs

  • Full length of the damaged section
  • Close-up of rot, splits or loose fixings
  • Where the damage meets good timber

Plaster & Painting

  • Whole wall/ceiling showing the repair area
  • Close-up of cracks or holes with light across them
  • Adjacent painted surface for colour matching

Leaks & Plumbing

  • Where the water is coming from
  • The tap, showerhead or pipe fitting
  • Any staining or damage underneath

Tiling Jobs

  • Whole tiled area from straight on
  • Close-up of cracked or loose tiles
  • A grout line in good condition for matching

General Repairs

  • The full area around the problem
  • Close-up of the damage or worn part
  • Any model numbers, labels or measurements
